Okay, here's my last bit of information on this issue for now. I tried a completely separate clean machine -- my MacBook Pro (running 10.10.4). Followed all the instructions for setting up the FTDI drivers but nothing is detected when the programmer is plugged in (using multiple USB cables as well)....
