Trying to update Wink for the IR feature

Postby gramstead » Sun Feb 14, 2016 4:05 am

Well I got a 3 pack. Wanted to get one for my daughter to use with the IR and one each for my son and my nephew. Cannot seem to upload anything to any of them.
I have done the following:
tried 3 cables (USB) on 4 ports
Tried both interface boards and the cables as well
Windows shows the connection as COM 3
Set board to Arduino Fio
turned on the Wink

I get the following log file from the upload attempt. I have tried reinstalling the drivers/software and rebooted the pc as well.... Any thoughts would be great.

I'm pretty sure I know exactly what your problem is. Notice the very last line that you provided from the log file dump. I think that's the key.

Code: Select all

. . .\WinkHardware.h:28:31: fatal error: Adafruit_NeoPixel.h: No such file or directory

After you installed the ArduinoIDE software, the next step in the process was to install the Ringo Software Libraries:
Install Ringo Software Libraries
The software libraries include code you'll add to your Arduino installation. This only needs to be done one time. Arduino will use these library files as necessary automatically after they are installed.
1) Download a zip archive including all the Ringo library files:
https://github.com/plumgeek/PlumGeek-Ri ... v01-01.zip

2) Copy the three folders included in this zip file into your Arduino/libraries folder:
For the examples to compile, these three important folders must be copied into your libraries folder: Adafruit_NeoPixel, RingoMsTimer2, and RingoWire
You'll need to re-start the Arduino software for it to see the new libraries.

The "libraries" folder is located inside the folder where your computer saves Arduino sketches.

I know this is a little confusing because you have a Wink and it's telling you to install Ringo Libraries. And it's confusing later because you need to view WINK preloaded sketch, not Ringo's. But following the steps above will copy several folders to your IDE libraries directory. One of those library directories is called "Adafruit_NeoPixel". It's a set of code that allows software to interact with the fancy tri-color Wink eyes. The other two libraries are probably Ringo-specific and may not be needed, but it doesn't hurt. But the NeoPixel library is needed.

As an experiment, I moved my existing libraries folder and restarted the IDE and attempted to compile a sketch. It gave me exactly the "Missing ...NeoPixel.h" file error.

So, I'm pretty sure you just forgot to copy the "Ringo Software Libraries".

Good Luck!

Wayne's advice is correct and should solve the problem. Just a note that some seem to have trouble with, once you get set up you'll see the Sketchbooks (code examples) in the menu of the arduino software.Make sure you only use the Ringo sketches for the Ringo bot and likewise Wink sketches for Wink bot. The examples I dont think are portable between bots without modification. I think plumgeek will need to standardise the software and install process for their platform but remember this is still a new product, not something that has had years of development and testing so don't stress. I've got both Ringo and Wink and the sketches labelled for those bots work fine as they are with no errors. When verifying the code the software doesn't automatically take you to the line in the file it has a problem with so be careful you don't edit the includes by mistake instead of the sketch you are trying to upload.

Well that did it. Chalk one up for "RTFM" (Read the fricken manual) and I missed that step. lol

Thanks!

Rtfm helps but i think from the "problems" being posted there may be some things not clear enough in the wink documentation for people who didnt get the ringo either. Just a ripple for plumgeek to sort out, on the whole i think they've done a great job, the bots work and the lessons are clear to understand, its just the setup where the confusions occur, once you're past that its plain sailing. You're not alone, so enjoy your new robot minion. :)
